German food, Articles of Daily Use and Feed Code, also known as "Food, Tobacco Products, Cosmetic and Other Daily Consuming Management Act", replaces the old legislation becoming the most important basic legal document in food hygiene management in Germany, and serving as the guideline and the core of other specific food hygiene laws and regulations.
The legislation stipulated general and basic provisions for food in Germany. All food and foodrelated commodities on the German market must comply with the basic provisions above it. In the chapters 30, 31, 33, it clearly specified the requirements related to food contact materials.
1) LFGB Section 30 prohibits any commodity containing toxic materials harmful to human health;
2) LFGB Section 31 prohibits some harmful constituents that endanger human health or affect the appearance of food (such as color transfer), smell (such as ammonia migration) and taste (such as aldehydes migration) transferred from the material to food;
3) LFGB Section 33 regulates food contact materials with misleading or ambiguous information. It probably can not be sold in the market under such condition.
German Federal Institute for Risk Assessment BfR has given recommended safety indicators by the study of each type of food contact materials. In the meanwhile, in compliance of the requirements of LFGB Section 31, all food contact materials exporting to Germany must go through overall sensory examination except ceramics. These provisions and the framework requirements of LFGB constitute the statutory regulations of German food contact materials.
