Phthalates, or phthalate esters, are a group of chemical compounds that are mainly used as
plasticizers (substances added to plastics to increase their flexibility). They are chiefly used to turn polyvinyl chloride from a hard plastic into a flexible plastic without sacrificing its durability. But its unreasonable use will harm human body, and bring serious impact on growth of infants and young children. The updated EU directive for phthalate 2005/84/EC came into force on January 16, 2007, this directive applies to all plastic toys and childcare articles; US Consumer Product Safety Improvement Act 2008 also prohibit the use of phthalates in toys and child care products. Government of Canada also propose to restrict the use of phthalate on June, 2009.
