In Japan MHLW Decree No. 370 "Specifications and Standards for Food, Food Additives, etc" and the latest revision made in 2008, food contact material standards are divided into three categories:
1) In General
It specified the requirements on heavy metal, particularly lead content in food containers and food packaging materials. For instance, stipulating that lead in tin should not more than 5%; other metal containers shall not exceed 10%.
2) By Material
The standars were stipulated for metal cans, glass, ceramics, rubber, etc. Other than that, the standards dealing with13 polymers have been also established, covering PVC, PE, PP, PS, PET, PMMA, PC and so on.
3) By Use
The standards established particularly on materials with specific purpose, such as packaging of pasteurized milk, packaging of street food.
